In the Cévennes, distances are measured by time and not kilometres. Come and visit, you will then understand why.
We are approx 650 miles from Calais. Take your time and enjoy an overnight stay… perhaps Reims for Champagne lovers or Burgundy for the wine. Having your own vehicle is very convenient and useful.
Route: A26, A5, A31, A6, A7. Head for Reims; pick up signs for Lyon, continue through to junction 19 Bollène of A7. Head for Alès; at Alès pick up the N106 in the direction of Mende.
Can be the least-cost method if you reserve at the best time (usually early). An attractive option if you enjoy flying.
Route : Ryanair between Luton and Nîmes. We are about one and a quarter hour's drive from Nîmes airport. Hire a car. Five minute drive on the autoroute to Nîmes, then pick up the N106 (green signs for Alès, and from Alès follow the sign for Mende).
Sit back and enjoy the scenery. You can get the Eurostar from London St Pancras International, change at Lille (easy change of platform) or Paris (30-45 minutes to get from Paris Gare du Nord to Paris Gare de Lyon) on the RER (D line).
Come into Avignon or Nîmes. Hire a car or take a taxi and we are one and a half hour drive from Avignon or an hour's drive from Nîmes.
When you find yourself saying… ‘are we lost‘ you're probably close. Following the N106 to Mende, you'll go past La Grand-Combe. Just before you reach Sainte-Cécile-d'Andorge there is an S bend in the road, following a small bridge but before the dam of the lake. You'll notice a small road to the right with a sign saying ‘Mélarède’, follow it. Climb the track for about two kilometers passing a water station. At the sign marked ‘Mélarède’ you will see Sentiers Perdus right up in front of you.
