A glimpse into our world and how we came to be

A message from the owners

When it comes to finding a dream home everyone has their wish list. When we first saw Sentiers Perdus we both felt the pull and the potential to breathe new life back into a dilapidated ancient ruin. Nine years on from an extensive renovation project and with careful attention to its striking location we have transformed it into a home that we believe fuses the ancient and the modern. There is a soul and a sense of history at Sentiers Perdus and a serenity that comes from the warm Mediterranean light. That is why we are here and that is why we want to share this magical place with you.

We wanted to make sure that the restoration was right for us; the exterior remains true to its original 18th century construction whilst the interior has been designed from scratch and tells you a story of the people who live here.

With its vast windows, neutral colours, abundance of natural materials, this luxury retreat reflects its tranquil surroundings perfectly. Sentiers Perdus is one of those places you would think only exist on a French film set: perched high within a forested valley and offering stunning views across a breathtaking landscape.

With only seven ancient stone farmhouses in the valley, it’s a secret corner in the foothills of the Cévennes where everyone knows your name. With amazing scenery that constantly evolves

as the light changes during the day, it’s a living canvas.

Outdoor space is a huge part of the way we live. Whether you want to walk the terraces taking a moment to yourself before the start of the day or simply soak up the scenery from your sumptuous six foot bed you know you have found yourself in a magical place, where time seems to stand still and the soul breathes ever more deeply. Last thing at night as you relax on the first floor terrace or outside your guest bedroom you will lose yourself in the infinite sparkling galaxies that shine down on the valley and while away hours counting the shooting stars.

That is why we are here and that is why we want to share this magical place with you.

FINDING THE CÉVENNES

The Cévennes is a maze of deep valleys with winding rivers of clear waters and hill slopes covered in forests of sweet chestnut along with the mulberry, which was planted in days gone by for feeding the silkworms bred in the mills called magnaneries. A country of rebellion and tradition, the Cévennes gradually reveals a little more of itself at each bend on its winding roads and vertiginous footpaths.

WHY WE DID IT

The fifth house we saw on a wet and miserable weekend in January 2010, we couldn’t let go of the feeling we had when we first saw Sentiers Perdus, perched on its south facing hillside. Even in the rain, it offered a dramatic and untold story. A place where only the walls were intact we knew then we were to be the guardians of its history, preserving its beauty for future generations, sharing its spectacular physical setting with guests who arrive tired and in need of calm and space.

We wanted to create a space that we could share with others and where everybody has their own sense of privacy. After years of living under grey British skies and unpredictable summers we knew we wanted that space to be bathed in Mediterranean sunlight, where the clouds float higher, where the sky is painted a deeper shade of blue and where the landscape offers a compelling intensity and complexity of colour and contour.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

We came across the ruin that is now our home in 2010. It was one of those moments where we turned a corner in the road and knew we had found what we had been looking for. We feel a profound connection with the valley and the house. It is a place that stops everyone in their tracks, slows time and creates the space to think, breathe and re-connect with what it means to be human in an amazing setting that both humbles and inspires.

Our journey isn't yet over. Think ‘Grand Designs’ and then some. Our story is complex and rich in anecdote, learning and insight. Sprinkled with naivety and hindsight. Our book is in the making. It has been a test for us, in our love and commitment to each other, in our dogged determination to fulfil our dream. And now we feel we have what is a unique and indulgent hideaway that restores mind, body and spirit to those who visit.

There is more to be done. With over 15 acres of hillside, we have terraces and forest, waterfalls and paths, trees yet to be discovered and nurtured, dilapidated stone barns that call out for love and attention.

We have plans. Some are already in place and more are to come. Come and explore, engage and discover. You will find a place where time stands still, a magical blend of space, indulgence and connection. We guarantee you will leave restored, refreshed and inspired.

When we promise we deliver. If we don’t you need to let us know or else we can’t put things right.

OUR VALUES

At Sentiers Perdus we feel connected with who we are and why we are here. We have worked hard to embody this in our values which permeate the environment.

Our philosophy is simple… attention to detail.

Below you'll find four core values that run through everything we do.

Sophie Conran Portmeirion Range

Quality

…is an important word for us. We source the best and pride ourselves on doing the simple exceptionally well. We also believe that great value does not mean a low price.

Bulthaup Kitchen Detailing

Design

…is not an end in itself. We believe in form and function. If it’s not useful, understandable and honest why have it? Each room has a selection of carefully curated design items which have stood, and continue to stand, the test of time.

Consistency

…underpins everything we do. Our behaviour, our food, our rooms, our promises, our delivery. We want you to return, we want you to share who we are and what we offer. If we aren’t consistent with what we do and how we do it we won’t get you back.

Space

…to think, to breathe, to explore, to discover, to do and to be. Sentiers Perdus is a place where people come to pause, rest and immerse themselves in a tranquil retreat full of convivial soul.
